Looking
back on 2005–06, it’s tempting to call it the Year of
the Primal Scream.
It
seems that not a month went by without something happening on campus
that produced shouts of outrage or exasperation. Issues surrounding
budget, personnel, and academic freedom sparked responses in the
state capital, around Wisconsin, and sometimes around the nation.
Those of us in alumni relations spent a lot of time listening to
angry or bewildered voices asking what was going on in Madison.
All
in all, it was a good year.
You
may be surprised to hear that, but you shouldn’t be. The bottom
line is, WAA is all about keeping alumni in communication with the
UW. That means that we want to make sure that the university can
speak to its graduates, and we want to make sure that it hears those
graduates’ voices, too.
Throughout
2005–06, we worked to refine alumni communications, both in
terms of talking to our fellow grads and making sure we hear them.
We launched new efforts to engage alumni
chapters around the country; we created Alumni
for Wisconsin, a new vehicle to highlight the university’s
impact on the state; we expanded lifelong
learning and outreach opportunities; and we sought ways to connect
the university to its overseas graduates.
As
you read this annual report, think about the many voices that make
up the UW community — students and faculty, as well as alumni
across Wisconsin and around the world. It’s a tremendous chorus
that gathers more energy with every new voice.
On
Wisconsin!
