Alumni News — early years
News came in from the University of Kansas (KU) in March that
a $250,000 bequest will establish the Whitley and Mary Frances Austin
Graduate Fellowship in journalism to honor Whitley Austin
'31. The irony? Austin, the longtime publisher of the Salina
[Kansas] Journal and a former KU regent, had once suggested
that KU's School of Journalism be abolished and all of its courses
consolidated instead at Kansas State. Austin died in 1995. His widow,
son, and daughter made the generous gift.
How's this for a tribute?
A May Wisconsin State Journal headline read, "Madison
Bids Farewell to Celebrated Resident" who was "a symbol
of virtually everything good about Madison for more than six decades."
The article was referring to Velma Bell Hamilton MA'33,
who's moved to Connecticut. She was the first president of the NAACP's
reorganized Madison chapter in 1943, and today a Madison middle
school bears her name.
Artist Kenneth Karsten PhD'39 describes himself
as "first and foremost an investigator and student," but
we'd say that he's a pretty cutting-edge guy. With three degrees
in chemistry and plant physiology, Karsten has also indulged his
creative side through photography and illustration, and his latest
love is the digital camera. He adds that his family planned a ninetieth-birthday
celebration/reunion at his Spring Hill, Florida, home in July.
