Tent Colony Woods

This 15-acre woods, formerly North Shore Woods, lies between Lake Mendota Drive and the lake and extends from Wally Bauman Woods on the west to Frautschi Point on the east.  A walking trail along the lake connects the Eagle Heights Natural Area to Frautschi Point.

The eastern section of this woods was the site of the "Tent Colony” provided by the University for summer school students from about the time of World War I until the late 1950's. Up to 40 platforms were used by summer school students and their families.

A restoration of Tent Colony Woods, funded by the Class of 1955, has begun.  Invasive species, like Buckthorn and Honeysuckle, will be removed and native plants will be planted.  To learn about this restoration, see:

Tent Colony Woods also has severe erosion problems. In order to find out about these problems and what the University intends to do about them, visit Raymer's Cove, formerly Anglers' Cove.
