Native Plant Nursery Project |
The
Nursery Project is on Hold
The
purpose of the Native Plant Nursery will be to provide native
woodland, savanna and prairie plants for plantings in the
Campus Natural Areas. This important project has been placed
on hold until the Preserve Committee designates an appropriate
site for the nursery and until we find qualified volunteers
who will take responsibility for setting it up and running
it.
Future
Plans
When
we have final approval of a site for the nursery, volunteers
will be needed to remove weeds and prepare the soil so that
planting can begin as soon as possible. We will also need
volunteers who can provide horticultural advice to aid in
setting up the garden. Eventually, we hope to plant native
seeds (woodland as well as grassland plants) and propagate
native shrubs from cuttings (Viburnum,
dogwood, hazelnut, shadbush and others). Plants will be weeded,
tended, and prepared for transplant to other parts of the
Preserve.
A
Project Leader and Other Volunteers are Needed
Please
contact Contact
Glenda at 231-1530 or denniston@wisc.edu if
you would like to help launch this important project. When
a site is chosen we will help in preparing the plot and doing
the initial planting. We also need volunteers who can tend
the plantings and prepare them for transplant as well as
knowledgeable people who can provide horticultural advice
and aid in setting up and operating the nursery.
