University Bay Committee

The University Bay Committee, consisting of Arboretum Committee members James Dickson, Norman Fassett, Arthur Hasler, Aldo Leopold, and William Longenecker, was appointed to develop a plan for the newly acquired Picnic Point property.  The University Bay Committee produced the following documents suggesting how the University Bay area should be developed:

In August 1955, the University of Wisconsin’s Biological Division Committee on Natural Areas on the Campus (J. T. Emlen, G. W. Longenecker, L. E. Noland, and J. T. Curtis, Chairman) created a list of eleven biologically important areas on Campus for teaching and research.  To see a copy of this list and how they were used for education, see

These biologically important areas were subsequently put under the control of the Wooded Areas Committee.  The management of the recreational areas of the University of Wisconsin Campus was assigned to the Physical Plant.  To see three of the documents involved in this transition, see the following Grant Cottam documents:
