Lakeshore Nature Preserve

The
Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a place where individuals
can experience the aesthetic and educational benefits of
nature within the bounds of the campus. The Preserve provides
biologically significant land, wetland, and lakeshore areas.
It supports natural plant and animal communities for teaching,
research, outreach, and environmentally sensitive recreation.
The Preserve contributes a strong sense of place to the
campus and its surrounding communities and fosters a mutually
beneficial relationship between people and nature.
Purpose
The
Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a non-profit organization
that serves as an advocate for the active stewardship of the
Preserve. The
Friends works to ensure the integrity of the Preserve by recommending
appropriate policies and guidelines, by collaborating in stewardship
activities and by fostering concern about the impact of contiguous
development.
It aims to preserve, protect, and nurture the Preserve
through the vicissitudes of time.
The
Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve

encourages
appropriate and constructive use of the Preserve

brings
to the University's Preserve Committee the views
and concerns of the Friends Board and membership

communicates
University policies and recommendations concerning
the Preserve to its membership and the broader
community

offers
the experience and expertise of its membership

provides
a long-term continuity which seeks to protect
the Preserve through changing committee memberships
and University administrations

seeks
a cooperative working relationship with the University’s
Preserve Committee

supports
the use of the Preserve as a learning environment

recruits
volunteers for stewardship activities

raises
funds to assist in carrying out the mutual goals
of the Friends and the Preserve Committee

Membership
Membership
in the Friends is open to any individual who shares an appreciation
for the significance of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve and
desires to assist in its preservation. No
person shall be excluded from membership on the basis of
race, creed, age or sexual orientation. Members support
the organization through dues and subscribe to the Purpose
stated above. |
